As the year comes to an end, I have the honour of drafting this last newsletter of the year. I would like to use this opportunity to invite you on a journey of reflection and share an outlook on 2024.
Long nights and short days
Living in Southern Sweden, November and December can be challenging. The sun doesn’t show often, it gets light late and dark early. Thankfully, the Nordic country has adapted a certain coziness at this time of year. In my neighbourhood, windows are being dressed with candlesticks, bringing light to the darkness.
Following that pattern, just a few days ago, we celebrated the Lucia tradition. Alongside Midsummer, the Lucia celebrations are one of the key foremost traditions in Sweden. The Lucia celebrations also include gingerbread biscuits and sweet, saffron-flavoured buns called lussekatter. You eat them with glögg, Swedish mulled wine, or coffee. And if you want to experience this special atmosphere, I invite you to listen to a concert of a choir, performing traditional songs:
As I moved to Sweden for the first time a decade ago, these traditions were completely new to me. Good friends of mine are Italian, and interestingly the Lucia celebrations are slightly different for them. This is something that I find truly amazing and astonishing about Europe: a shared set of values and traditions, that then turn into local versions and customs.
A special year for me and Life Size
2023 has been special in many ways for me and the team at Life Size. In March, we completed our Employee Ownership transition. Since then, the team that delivers outstanding work for climate tech companies owns the agency and has a strong say in its direction. Personally, it has been an honour to step into the role of CEO, and I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
In general, 2023 hasn’t been easy for tech companies with funding being massively down. Of course, this has also affected the climate tech sector, although less harshly than on B2C-facing tech companies.
We’ve been fortunate that we’ve been able to increase the number of outstanding climate tech companies and VCs we’re working with. From crafting innovative strategies to fueling growth for our clients, we delivered on and exceeded expectations – just as it should be. I’m proud of the mainstream coverage we’ve achieved for many. Our commitment to excellence has been evident in the successful support we’ve given to fundraising projects, making us the trusted partner in our clients’ success stories.
An outlook on 2024
As we look ahead to 2024, I anticipate a pivotal year marked by the European elections and an unprecedented push toward decarbonisation. The European political landscape will play a crucial role in shaping policies that prioritise sustainability and climate action. I hope for a year that promises to be defined by bold decisions and collaborative efforts to build a more sustainable and resilient future.
While in the realms of climate tech the future sometimes appears to be gloomy (“2023 was the hottest year ever recorded”), I turn to the light which is the impact of all the climate tech companies and VCs out there. In 2024, we’ll do our best to amplify your voice and make your story heard.
I wish you a joyful holiday season, a (hopefully) relaxed time with family and friends, and a fantastic start to the new year!
